NYTimes wraps up IHT.com: citing “hard decisions”

…and speaking of web revamps… the NYTimes Company decided to fold IHT.com Wednesday, just one year after the NYTimes Company’s 2007 all-out buy of the IHT from the Washington Post Company.

For so long, the IHT.com site seemed to existentially teeter between being a more Euro NYTimes.com, and a shoddy attempt at a genuinely international medium (when everyone overseas knows it’s only read by American expatriates, or Americans on holiday.)

The memo circulated from the New York Times Company, quoted here from Reuters.com, said called for “hard decisions” and that the formal switchover (when IHT.com will redirect to to NYTimes.com) will come in spring ’09:

“Regular NYTimes.com users will be able to opt-in to that new home page; the IHT.com URL will also redirect there. We will also feature six new global section fronts, again chosen for international readers: business, travel, culture, sports, style and opinion. Those will be found alongside the standard NYTimes.com section fronts and also featured on the global edition homepage. All IHT content will now be published on the integrated site as well as archived and searchable on NYTimes.com.”
